Class is in session for close to 500 superintendents from across the state. The school district leaders kicked off their annual fall summit in Rochester Sunday.

This year they're focusing on leadership and how to build stronger relationships with parents, students and even area businesses.

The New York State Council of School Superintendents says because of shrinking resources, this is a unique time in public education in the state and the country.

"We are at the pinnacle of where things can go really well, or things can be bad for a long period of time,” said Dr. L. Oliver Robinson, president of the New York State Council of School Superintendents. “We can't afford for things to be bad for a long period of time."

In addition, the two-day conference will recognize Dr. Steve Uebbing with the distinguished service award. Uebbing is the former superintendent of the Canandaigua City School District.
