Rochester Police made an arrest in the assault of a referee after a semi-pro football game at Edgerton Park Saturday.

Leon Woods, 25, of Rochester faces two counts of first degree assault.

The Western New York Cougars player is accused of hitting referee Pete McCabe in the face with a helmet.

Police arrested Woods on Empire Boulevard around 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

The victim’s son, Pete McCabe, Jr., said his father suffered broken bones in his face in the attack that he believes was in retaliation for officials earlier ejecting two players from the game.

Pete McCabe is preparing for facial reconstruction surgery Friday.

The Western New York Cougars organization has not returned our calls for comment.
