Bivona Hosts Child Sex Abuse Talk in Victor
Victor Central Schools is inviting district parents to a community outreach program Wednesday night focusing on how to speak to children about abuse.
Last week, a 12-year-old from Victor was charged with raping three children under the age of 11. Bivona Child Advocacy Center will host the program along with The Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Bivona helps families navigate through abuse cases and helps with medical, prosecution and counseling services. Last year, the center evaluated 1,200 children for abuse. Of those, 42 percent of them were under the age of seven. Bivona said it is never too early to talk to kids about abuse.
"We need to empower our kids that it is okay to talk about it and we should talk about it and we as parents are not going to get mad at them or angry at them for saying something like this, but that it is not their fault and they should be able to tell a trusted adult--whether it be a parent, a teacher, a neighbor, an uncle a godparent, a coach but to tell a trusted adult they feel comfortable with,” said Mary Whittier, Executive Director of Bivona Child Advocacy Center.
Bivona is a resource for families all over the region. You can reach Bivona at (585) 935-7800.
The community program in Victor is Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Educational Center located at the school campus.
