Eighth grade math teacher Jacquie Gilmore has been using a new tool that replaces her old blackboard. For about a year, she has used the SMART Notebook software.

"I love them. I think they keep the kids super engaged. I ask a question and they all (want to) come up to the board and they’re able to do it on the board. I use it as an incentive,” said Gilmore.

For Gilmore, the SMART board allows her to demonstrate problems, connect to the Internet and more, all at her fingertips.

Even students can log on as she is teaching by using remote devices, called Senteos.

"I'm trying to incorporate the Senteos more, right into the lessons, where they can answer a question and give just quick a response," said Gilmore.

Within the past few years, about 300 SMART boards have been placed in elementary and high school classrooms district-wide. The goal is that every classroom will have one within the next few years.

To prepare for the SMART board integration the district will use the grant to train all teachers within three years.

Right now, the focus is on training, 5th through 8th grade, science and health teachers.

"The training has been awesome so far. It's going to really help with building the lesson and making it more creative," said Marybeth Mueller, high school health tacher.

The grant will also help add 34 model classrooms, fully equipped with more than just SMART boards, but also laptops and document cameras.

"By the end of the third year we will have model classrooms in every school in the district. The goal is two per school," said Kevin Lydon, instructional technology resource teacher.

Teachers like Gilmore say incorporating technology into curriculum not only makes learning easier, but fun.

"I love it. I think it's awesome. I can't wait to see what they come up with next," said Gilmore.
