African-American leaders in Rochester look forward to David Paterson's new position in Albany.
They say it does not buy the black community here any special favor in Albany but it is an example to young black men and women of how anything is possible.
Paterson himself understands he is in a position of influence in more ways than one.
He said in his speech that he feels proud and flattered if his role as governor makes an impression on younger people.
Leaders here say it will.

"David Paterson represents all the people in this state- be they brown, black, white or whatever,” said Assemblyman David Gantt, D-Rochester. “He just doesn't represent the African-American community but it does say to the African-American community is the fact that you work hard and you're bright as he is you'll get the opportunity."
Tim McCauley is the president of the Rochester Black Business Association. He has met Paterson several times and said his rise to power will not create favoritism, but is an example to so many young people.
"I'm excited for the young African-Americans who can now see someone who has achieved recognized success and who is not an athlete or entertainer," said McCauley.
Gantt is fighting the flu but hopes to be in Albany to support his friend Paterson Monday.
