Time in running out to help so many in need this year. You can give the gift of shelter to a family this holiday season.
The Nealys enjoy family game night at the Volunteers of America guest house. Edwin, Anna, and their three boys found themselves without a place to stay when they returned to Rochester after trying to make a go of it in Arizona.
"We didn't want to impose on family because they work and stuff. So we decided to call DSS after hours," said Anna Nealy, VOA Guest House client.
The Department of Social Services referred the Nealys to the VOA Guest House, which can accommodate up to 10 homeless families at a time.
"And they come here and they need shelter so we temporarily house them, help them to find shelter, and provide some rental subsidies for families going into permanent housing," said Angelia Smith-Wilson, VOA Housing Program vice president.
"I think it's awesome because it's really nice to have everything. Phones you can use, home cooked meals, laundry facilities, Internet. Just excellent," Nealy said.
Families typically stay about a month before finding permanent housing, but the Volunteers of America still offers a lifeline after families leave.
"Obviously case management support. That can range from moderate to intensive in regard to the situations the families are facing," Smith-Wilson said.
The Nealys said that when times get tough like this, they focus on their childrens' future to get them through.
"I want them to go to good schools because they're very well high in their education, on their grades. I don't want them to fall down. I worked very hard to keep them where they're at. So I think that's a plus for me," said Nealy.
A plus for the Nealys: since talking with YNN, the VOA has helped them find their own place to live.
