The Volunteers of America "Your Caring Gifts" campaign, sponsored by YNN Rochester, is way short of this year's fundraising goal.
So far, the VOA has raised only $50,000 toward its $85,000 goal.
The Volunteers of America uses that money to help families and individuals in need.
The organization now hopes to spread its appeal in this final week by using social networking.
"We're turning to Facebook and Twitter and Linkedin to really engage the community to give a gift," said Shaunta Collier-Santos of the Volunteers of America. "We're issuing a challenge. Donate $75 to supply food to a family, or $52 for shelter for a family. So we're really looking to the community to support us, and we're going to where the people are using the social network media."
