There is big news out of the Catholic School System in Rochester. Nazareth Schools and Aquinas Institute are merging.

Nazareth will now hold prekindergarten through 6th grade at its campus. The school's seventh through 12th grade students will move to Aquinas Institute.

Nazareth will end its Academy, which was an all girls high school for grades 9-12.

Our Lady of Mercy High will then become the only all girls Catholic high school in the area. Students were told of the changes Wednesday morning.

These changes will take effect in September of this year.

McQuaid Comments on Changes at Nazareth and Aquinas

Fellow Rochester Catholic school McQuaid Jesuit High School responded to the Nazareth Academy/Aquinas Institute partnership.

School officials released a statement today saying:

"The recent decisions, including today's announcement, will challenge the faith that many have in the future of Catholic education. I believe we should look at it as a sign of hope, of renewal and rebirth. There are many of us who are committed to the distinctive educational and formational program found in Catholic schools and realize that the models of the past may not serve today or tomorrow. While recognizing the challenges Catholic education does realistically face, we at McQuaid Jesuit are hopeful and optimistic about the future."
