The Maplewood YMCA in Rochester is about to get $5 million worth of updates.

The renovations mean that the facility will have to temporarily shut down for nine months for construction. The Maplewood branch is showing its age. Most of the building dates back to 1916.

The staff and members there are looking forward to enjoying the updates that include 16,000 square feet of new program space, to include a gym and teen center.

Handicapped-accessible updates will go in. The pool will be renovated, windows are going in and the wellness center will go from 14 pieces of workout equipment to 44.

"It is an old building, and so we have fixed it up and done the best with what we have, but now we will renovate it so it is like new," said Sara DelVecchio, the Maplewood YMCA's executive director. "To have something big like this happen in the city and have it be so community based, I think people are ecstatic about that."

The Maplewood "Y" has been preparing its 1,100 members for the closing date of April 25. Members are encouraged to work out at the Y's nine other branches.

The new and improved Maplewood YMCA will reopen next February.
