The cold and windy weather didn't stop people from remembering Hunter Resch. The seven-year-old was killed by his father in a murder suicide last month.
"Dear Hunter,” said second grader Katelyn Camelio. “We would have made good friends. Love, Katelyn."
A balloon launch Sunday honored the little boy who did so much in such a short amount of time.
“Dear Hunter,” said Joyce Williams reading the message her daughter Teaha Williams wanted to send. “I wish you were still alive. I miss you Hunter."
Between 200 and 300 people gathered at Braddock Bay to remember Resch. His schoolmates from Paddy Hill Elementary along with fellow scouts and friends showed up to write personal messages on as many as 800 balloons.
"So she could get a final chance to say good-bye to Hunter and it was important to her,” said parent Jeff Stremick.
Organizers say this was a way for them to say good-bye by sending their messages up to Hunter.
"I'm just a mother, with kids that go to Paddy Hill and I'm a part of the Greece community,” said organizer Stacey Morrison. “I wanted to show, we wanted to show Sue that her community is behind her and that we love her and that we love Hunter."
"Over and over again, we've just been touched by how such a little person could expand and connect to so many people,” said Paddy Hill Elementary Principal Kathy Graupman. “I think when you look around and see so many people here who cared about Hunter, I think that has to feel really good for his family."
Even though this was a very emotional gathering, there were a lot of smiles and laughter to go around. That is something everyone said Hunter did a lot in his short life.
"I really, really liked Hunter a lot and he was really nice," said classmate Alison Salzbrenner. When asked what she wrote on her balloon, she replied, “I love you, Hunter.”
