Before you bring home a rabbit make sure your entire family is ready. A plush toy might be a better option if your think caring for a new pet might be too much for you to handle.

Most house bunnies, when properly socialized, get along well with other pets, but careful supervision by adults is an absolute must to be sure no one gets hurt.

To feel happy and safe your bunny needs a little home of his or her own. A crate you would have for a medium sized dog with a small hutch within is a good size that allows your bunny room to play, stretch, go potty and grow. The House Rabbit Network advocates that all domestic rabbits be housed indoors all year round.

Just like your dog, cat and people, your rabbit needs exercise. At least three hours outside of their cage every day. Play with them in a secure area with barrier set up so they can't go places with hidden dangers, like electrical wires and furniture. Rabbits can also squeeze into tiny spaces, become trapped and not be able to get out on their own. So when your rabbit is out and about, in the house keep an eye on them.

Rabbits also need a diet rich in hay, fresh leafy greens and a few carrots along with plenty of water every day to be healthy. You can also add a commercial pellet food to their diet ask your vet which brand they prefer.

Although rabbits clean themselves you should brush them regularly, it keeps them from ingesting too much fur and making them sick. Rabbits can live into their teens when cared for properly and are a long-term commitment, not a disposable holiday decoration.

Like many other animals, there are bunnies that need loving homes at your local animal shelter or rabbit rescue organization. Remember for a happier healthier life, have your pets spayed and neutered, including rabbits.
