Squash took over the University of Rochester campus this weekend – and we're not talking about the vegetable.
The school played host to the 9th Annual Professional Squash Tournament. This year's amateur and Professional Squash Association world tour featured players from nine countries, including the U.S., Mexico, England, Canada, Finland, Peru, Australia, Switzerland, and Egypt.
Tournament finals were held Sunday. The racquet sport is big at the U of R, with six members of its team competing in the ProAm tournament. Three of them advanced into the qualifying rounds.
The team is ranked fifth in the nation this season.
"The University of Rochester to be able to showcase a professional tournament I think is going to be able to help them with their recruiting, getting young kids to play in Rochester. Every effort helps Rochester get more and more on the squash map," said Jack Fitzpatrick, Rochester Squash Racquets Association president.
The Rochester ProAm is run by the
Rochester Squash Racquets Association. It is Upstate New York’s biggest professional squash event.
