Once called the "Brittany spaniel" by the AKC this charming breed is also referred to by some as the "American Brittany" or simply the "Brittany", which is how the AKC now lists them, dropping the word spaniel from the name.
The Brittany is known for being an intelligent energetic willing to please family companion and bird dog. Named for the province in France where the breed is believed to originate, the Brittany's ancestors have been depicted in tapestries dating back to the 17th century.
The characteristics that made them prized as hunting companions make them ideal for modern families also. Life long dog lover Carla Fluery says her rescued Brittany is a perfect fit with her family.
"They're loving. Their personality is just so much fun. They are a lot like having a third or a fourth kid in the house. They act like a kid. They have that type of attachment. They treat you like you're mommy. I call them my furbabies. They're just super loving. And that's so nice to have an animal give you that kind of love back," said Fluery.
Just like any dog, especially one with a sporting history, a long walk and basic obedience should be a part of their daily routine. Brittanys have an easy to care for wavy coat and come in orange and white or liver and white combinations.
Prized as companions in the field the Brittany has made it into the show ring and agility competitions with great success, of course, winning the hearts and minds of those around them in the process.
