Hands-On Engineering Camp for Girls Gives Unique Opportunities

Hands-On Engineering Camp for Girls Gives Unique Opportunities
YNN Rochester and our parent company Time Warner Cable are working to "Connect a Million Minds" through a nationwide effort to focus kids on science, technology, engineering and math. We found another example at RIT Wednesday.

Girls got the chance to learn hands-on about engineering at "Everyday Engineering Summer Camp."

The camp ran for three weeks, each week with a different theme to let campers experience different ideas and projects.

The day camp allowed girls to build Lego robots and wind turbines, which is something they might not get to do during regular classroom instruction.

"This more hands-on, sort of playing while learning helps them remember better and you know, catch certain concepts that we may plant into their heads," said camp staff member Catina Jelfo.

The girls were also able to talk engineering over ice cream with a Harris RF employee. Harris and the Women in Engineering group at RIT sponsored the camp.

Their goal is to encourage more women to pursue careers in engineering and technology.
