Irondequoit Road Project Completes Final Stretch

A two-year, two-mile Irondequoit road project is winding down. Many neighbors say so far, so good.

A ship's mast sculpture is the final touch to the transformation of a stretch of Route 590 to what is now called Sea Breeze Drive.

The biggest change, structurally, was narrowing the roadway and replacing four traffic-signaled intersections with traffic roundabouts.

“The town really wanted to calm the corridor, lower speeds, and still make it very mobile for people to get up and down the road,” said Mark McAnany, transportation business segment leader for Bergmann Associates, which designed the project. “To make traffic safer out here, and that's what we did.”

When the project was first announced, it was met with resistance from many neighbors. Those who spoke to YNN Monday said they have seen a change for the better.

“Once you slow down and take it easy, they're very simple,” said neighbor Mary Deaton of Irondequoit.

“We’ve noticed the difference,” said Irondequoit resident Sy Seigel. “Traffic has slowed down.”

Engineers say not only is the road safer, but its design is more environmentally friendly.
