A Rochester home care business has grown so much in recent years, it needed a new building.
Companion Care of Rochester employees get some training at their new headquarters building on South Clinton Avenue.
“We provide personal care, companionship to the elderly and the disabled in their home,” said Al Gauvin, Companion Care of Rochester President.
What started 14 years ago with six employees has grown to 200 workers and satellite locations in Brockport and Geneva.
“We can do everything from skilled nursing, we have a number of registered nurses on staff, all the way to just companionship. House cleaning, prepare a meal or a number of meals, or just sit there and chat,” said Gauvin.
Companion Care management said the business really took off three years ago when it received New York State licensing.
“We’re now able to do personal care and provide nursing. Up to that point we were just able to do companion and housekeeping,” said Gauvin.
Gauvin credits the desire of Companion Care clients to stay in their homes as another reason for the uptick in business.
“As the baby boomers continue to age, they are much more discriminate on what they want and what they don’t want. Frankly, nursing homes fill a vital role for the community, but they’re not for everybody,” said Gauvin.
As those baby boomers age, Gauvin said business has grown 15% a year, giving the company a positive outlook with a bit of concern.
“The biggest worry we have in the future is providing enough caregivers to support the needs out there,” said Gauvin.
