A Genesee County woman has taken home the grand prize in an international song writing contest.
Lisa Barrett of Batavia has been named the winner in an online songwriting contest for "Best Original Song." Her entry, "When You Look at Me" was picked from over 100 entries.
Barrett wrote the song in memory of her nephew Austin, who died from a rare form of cancer when he was just under two years old. The song was inspired by the love Austin gave to others while he was alive.
"Who would have thought from looking at a picture, that a song would be born and that his story, his song would be heard globally around the world? Who would have thought from so much pain, would emerge so much joy?" said Barrett.
Barrett told YNN that she plans to donate portions of the money to the Essential Care for Children foundation in Austin’s memory.
