Wegman Companies Breaks Ground on Auction House
It's a new kind of auction item, but the proceeds go to a good cause. Wegman Companies broke ground on construction of a new home in Greece Tuesday.
Company officials say the home will be a nearly 1,900-square-foot Williamsburg, Colonial-style home.
Once construction is completed, the home will be auctioned off to benefit the Northwest and Westside YMCA's "Invest in Youth" campaigns.
"This means a great deal. We help thousands of kids and families take programs at the Y," said Will Gallagher, vice president of YMCA Westside Group. "This will be mostly for swim programs, summer camps, after school programs, memberships for families."
"It's all about the scholarship programs. The programs that kids otherwise couldn't afford. It takes events like this and volunteers and donations and things of this magnitude to make that happen for people that normally wouldn't get the chance," said Jay Wegman, vice president of Wegman Companies.
Bidding will begin at $175,000 and anyone interested can bid starting Tuesday. The retail value of the home is $210,000.
