Pulteney Residents Petition for Supervisor Resignation

By: Veronica R. Chiesi

A movement has started to force the resignation of a Steuben County Town Supervisor.

The Pulteney Open Government Group claimed that Town Supervisor Bill Weber failed to protect the town from what it called a "toxic waste water dumping project." That refers to a proposal by Chesapeake Energy for a hydrofracking wastewater facility at an abandoned gas well near Keuka Lake. The company withdrew its application for the project last month after community opposition.

Group members believe Weber withheld information from Pulteney residents. They started a petition asking for his resignation.

"Our concern for our group is that, you know, Bill wasn't looking out for the town and now we have in essence the fox is guarding the hen house," said Jeff Andrysick, Pulteney Open Government Group.

"I haven't the remotest intention of resigning and I have no plans other than to move forward and run the town of Pulteney's government as a public utility serving the people in their best interest," said Bill Weber, town supervisor.

Weber said he expects to make a presentation at the next town board meeting to show how the town is taking a stance against future gas drilling issues.
