Gorham residents attended a town board meeting Wednesday to discuss a proposed dog breeding facility recently granted a special use permit by the town's planning board.
The town is now considering putting a moratorium on dog kennels and breeding facilities.
The proposed facility is Martin Kennel, which wants to house 600 to 800 dogs in the building.
Curtis Martin owns a kennel in Seneca County. He came under scrutiny last year for having numerous federal violations. Inspectors found dogs that were not properly maintained.
Martin would not go on camera, but he did say the new facility would have proper ventilation and adequate space. Concerned residents from Ontario and neighboring counties came out to the meeting to voice their opinions.
"Everything to this point has been done lawfully. We've been accused of being on the take, and the applicant has also. There's a lot of animosity that's out there. The people who have been involved in this process are doing the very best they can to do what they're required to do by law without letting emotion getting involved," said Fred Lightfoote, town supervisor.
Lightfoote says he does support the moratorium and that the board is reviewing the application.
