Wayne Central Voters Reject Capital Projects

By: Leah George

Wayne Central Voters Reject Capital Projects
Wayne County voters rejected both capital project propositions Tuesday. They lined up in the district's high school throughout the day to vote on Wayne Central's $47.4 million capital plan, presented to voters in two parts.

Proposition 1 included a plan to consolidate the district's three elementary schools into one state-of-the-art building on the high school campus on Ontario Center Road; 1,774 said "no" while 693 voted "yes."

Proposition 2 included the proposal to build a wind turbine similar to the one at Harbec Plastics on Route 104 in the town of Ontario; 1,431 rejected this plan, while 1,042 voted in favor of the wind turbine.

The district said the project would improve the education climate, would not increase class sizes and would not cost taxpayers one cent. The project would have been funded with state money and reserve accounts. The district projected it would actually save around $135,000 a year in energy costs because of the wind turbine.

Given the current state of the economy and the state of New York, some taxpayers were skeptical that their tax bills won't go up. They said there are no guarantees that the more than $26.6 million in state money set aside for this capital project would actually come through.
