Another Democrat has thrown his hat into the ring for the 131st State Assembly District seat.

Rochester City School Board President Malik Evans announced he will run for the seat that covers parts of Rochester and the towns of Chili, Riga, Rush and Wheatland. Incumbent Assemblywoman Susan John, a Democrat, announced in January she would not seek re-election this coming November.

“On a regular basis, anyone of you should be able to get answers from the people you elected to serve you,” said Evans to a crowd of supporters. “That has been lacking and I pledge to you today that if I am your representative in the 131st Assembly District that you will be able to get answers from Malik Evans.”

Evans said he wants to give the people of the district a direct voice in Albany. He made his announcement on what he calls three core principles: reform, jobs and education.

"We need reform, we need spending restraint," he added.

Evans made the announcement at School 12 Saturday afternoon. He joins two other Democrats vying for the Democratic ticket. Fellow school board member Willa Powell and county legislator Harry Bronson of the 24th Legislative District have also announced their run for the seat.

"Number one, I have extensive experience from the business world. I think that is a differentiating factor right off the bat,” said Evans. "Number two, I think that I have a long record of community service. I've been a life long resident of the 131st Assembly District."

Local activist Harry Davis looked on while Evans made his announcement. Davis is thinking of running for the very same seat. He is set to announce his possible campaign in the next two weeks.

"I worked with his dad last year when I ran for city council,” said Davis. “We're buddies. We've known each other for a long time. Frankly, when Malik announced he was going to run for assembly, I wanted to hear first hand what his plans are."

Because there are at least three Democratic candidates, there will be a primary in September to decide who will be on the Democratic ticket for the November election.

GOP Chair Bill Reilich spoke says he's talking with a few potential candidates, but wouldn't name names at this point.
