New York State's oldest gay newspaper is now available online.
Staff and volunteers at the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley spent the last few years going through archives trying to find every edition of The Empty Closet. It's a monthly publication that has been in circulation for 40 years.
Now, a history that includes the struggles and triumphs of the gay movement in Rochester, is available to anyone with a computer.
"There are serious historians and researchers and students in high schools and colleges that are going to have a 40 year treasure trove of information, and it just doesn't cover the news but it covers sort of the whole social fabric and how things have changed over time,” said Sue Cowell, executive director of the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley.
The first edition of The Empty Closet was published in January 1971. That and each edition since can now be found online here.
