Police in Brighton have charged a man with murder in connection with the death of his former roommate.

The fatal shooting happened at the suspect's home on Hartfeld Drive, around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the Brighton Police Department, 23-year-old Maxwell Wyant is charged with second-degree murder. He is accused of fatally shooting 21-year-old Christopher Schoen with a shotgun inside his home. Authorities found Schoen's body outside the house.

Police said the two were arguing about property before the shooting. Another man was also at the house when the shooting took place.

Wyant was taken into custody without incident. Police say the victim had lived at the home with Wyant, but moved out a few months ago.

"You have to look at the totality of what happened and how it was reported and what we observed. I use the term we secured evidence at the scene; we secured a quantity of evidence from the scene and at the conclusion and consultation with the District Attorney's office – murder in the second degree is the charges that we filed," said Chief Mark Henderson of the Brighton Police Department.

Wyant was arraigned on the murder charge. He is being held in Monroe County Jail without bail. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Those who knew C.J. Schoen are still trying to make sense of what happened. Most were too upset to speak on camera, but a close friend told YNN he and others warned Schoen to stay away from Maxwell Wyant; that Wyant was "unstable.”

A candle was left burning Thursday afternoon in front of 37 Hartfeld Drive in Schoen's memory.

Schoen once shared this home with Maxwell Wyant; the same man police say shot and killed him Wednesday night.

Schoen is being remembered as a kind, warm-hearted person who had a strong passion for music. Many affectionately called him "my guy on the couch."

Austin Webster e-mailed this statement Thursday night:

"Christopher Schoen's life was centered around relationships with others, awakening their minds to interesting, innovative and progressive aspects of life. His time with us was ignorantly and prematurely terminated. What was given to us by him, will remain with us forever. May he finally rest in eternal peace."
C.J. Schoen had close ties to both Penfield and Irondequoit high schools. He had just turned 21 years old.
