Last weekend in Batavia, Midlakes won the Class BBB Sectional team title, the school's first. Twelve wrestlers head to State Qualifiers this weekend; five with Sectional individual titles.
The Screaming Eagles rallied on Saturday and locked up the crown when Tyler Smith scored a pin in the final minute of the 195 pound final.
"My coaches told me if I got the pin, then we'd definitely win the tournament. I was up 5-2 and I knew that if I got the six, then we'd get bonus points and win the Sectional title and we were down by 70 points so, it was a great comeback,” said Smith.
"We wrestled hard and he got the pin for us, it was unbelievable. All the parents were so happy because of the youth program and we just wanted to see that,” said Ralph Matteo, the Class BBB 120lb champion.
Smith, Matteo, the Fox brothers Collin and Connor, along with Sean Peacock each won titles. Last year, Peacock became the first Midlakes wrestler in 20 years to make the State Tournament. They all came through the school's youth program together.
"We've been wrestling Pee Wees together forever. Coach Howcroft has made a huge difference, even our youth kids are really good. We got a great program," said Connor Fox.
"Our coaches through the youth program helped us out a lot. Just dedication, always working hard, off-season wrestling,” said Peacock.
For the last month, the Screaming Eagles have been ranked number one in the State in Small Schools, something they never dreamed of coming up through the program.
"In youth, we used to take fourths and thirds in all our tournaments. Now, we're winning Sectional and State titles,” said Matteo.
All will face tests at SuperSectionals this weekend, none of them more formidable then Collin Fox at 138 pounds, where four-time State Champion Quinton Murphy of Holley likely awaits him somewhere along the way.
"Looking forward to the finals, being predicted to get tech-falled in the finals against a DI wrestler who’s got a full ride to IU, it's pretty intense but I gotta build myself up to go in there and hope not to get turned, just go at him, give him what I can,” said Collin.
The SuperSectionals are at RIT's Gordon Fieldhouse Friday and Saturday. The champions automatically qualify for States February 24th and 25 in Albany.
