Energy-Saving Cooling System at RIT Recognized

RIT teamed with Opticool Technologies on an energy efficient cooling system for its center for computational relativity and gravitation's black hole lab.
RG&E presented a rebate check of nearly $32,000 to RIT for saving on its energy usage with the new cooling system. The Opticool Data Center cooling solution uses an oil free, pumped refrigerant and modular cooling unit that increases cooling capacity while at the same time decreases overall energy consumption.
"We've come up with a technology that we think is groundbreaking. It's 95 percent more energy efficient than traditional, conventional cooling and we think that that is going to help propel us into the future," said Jeff Burke, Opticool Technologies president.
This is part of RIT's clean energy incubator program that received a $1.5 million grant from the New York State Energy and Development Authority.
"To date, I think you've created about 45 jobs and attracted about 22 million dollars in private equity capital into the creation of new companies,” said Linda Hardie, NYSERDA Project Manager.
Opticool is a local start-up company that recently graduated from RIT's clean energy incubator.
