BATAVIA, N.Y. — Batavia Downs executives cut the ribbon Tuesday on a new room designed for smokers.

The new room, which will have 40 additional machines, will allow more gamblers to play on video lottery terminals while they're smoking.

The room is kept separate from the rest of the casino and a ventilation system keeps the smoke contained.

Batavia Downs CEO Michael Kane says he's responding to his customers' demands.

"We found we do have a lot of customers who do smoke and they enjoy having the opportunity to do it in an enclosed and completely separate environment from our gaming floor," said Kane.

Kane says the facility is tested every two years. No employees are required to enter the room.
