A local man and his son say they have come up with a better way for you to slice your bagel. It's an invention created and manufactured in Rochester.

Dr. Dennis Moss' father-in-law was the man designated to cut all the family's bagels. He worried others would cut their fingers.

In fact, the Wall Street Journal recently reported that last year nearly 2,000 people went to the emergency room after cutting their fingers slicing bagels.

Dr. Moss wanted to do something about those numbers.

"As a physician I felt an obligation once we identified the problem, that we could solve it. And we could make it easy, fun and most importantly, safe to slice a bagel," Dr. Moss said.

Dr. Moss teamed up with his son Michael and came up with a prototype of what a safe bagel slicer might look like.

Using local engineers, designers and plastics company, they invented the Brooklyn Bagel Slicer.

The Mosses started selling the slicer commercially to bagel shops, restaurants, delis and caterers. People can now buy the product online or at specialty shops.

The only thing Brooklyn about the slicer is its name. Dr. Moss was born there and Michael was living there when they came up with the idea, but everything is made in Rochester.

The Mosses say there are plenty of other products out there that could be safer or better designed. As they slice their bagels today, they are also working on that next big idea for tomorrow.
