While many companies are downsizing in today's economy, this one is expanding.
Syntec Optics has seen tremendous growth since its humble beginnings.
The company broke ground in the 1980s, making plastic gears for Kodak and Xerox.
Now, they are the largest privately held manufacturer of plastic optics in North America.
Syntec produces materials for the medical, defense, and biometric fields, which are used in everything from blood gas analyzers to bar code scanners, and cell phones.
Marketing Manager Chad Zambito said the company is able to increase sales from year to year because of its work with today's technology.
"One of the neat ones we are working on is an eye tracking piece with eyecom, a company in California that is taking eyeglass and putting lenses in them to track they eye and watch the screen to see where you are looking. This has great for entertainment, gaming industry and also transportation to keep eyes on truckers and transportation people to see where they are looking to check for fatigue and those sorts of things," said Zambito.
Syntec employs 100 people in Pavilion and Rochester, and Zambito said it is people, partners, and industries make growth its futures.
"Rochester is the perfect place for optic companies. A lot of optics folks here. We've got incredibly intelligent people, we got great universities and schools systems, so you know we draw from our workforce and we are able to draw on our people and their talents. Rochester is the perfect place for that, no question.”
