"Welcome to ITT Exelis. It's going to be an Exelis Day!"
October 31st means a new name for ITT: Exelis. The company believes will excel it into even greater imaging technologies.
"We do a lot of things that you use everyday. When you think about what we do here in Rochester is mostly around imagery, image science work and the hardware that takes pictures like Nextview," said Chris Young, president of ITT Geospatial Systems.
ITT Exelis develops space and commercial sensing and geospatial information solutions for the military, aeropsace, government and commerical customers that includes a lot of classified work.
This company built the cameras for satellite imagery in Google Earth, the waveforms in GPS, the imagery in weather satellites and night vision technology.
"We have a lot of physists, optics engineers, a lot of electrical engineers and a lot of mechanical engineers so it's a wide variety," said Young.
ITT was once a conglomerate with more than 350 companies. Today, it's focused more on specialized divisions. Rochester is the defense part of the business.
"I think the most important thing is that it allows us to concentrate on a set of customers whether that be DOD or government related, but apply all our resources towards their betterment," said Chris Young.
ITT Exelis in Rochester employs 1,300 people. There are 22,000 ITT employees worldwide. The company is expected to generate some $5.8 billion in revenue this year.
"If you look at all the trends that are going on, I mean you take your iPod and hold it up to a building and it shows all the shops, that plays right into our strengths . The ability to lock imagery together with information is going to be more important as we go forward so that is why I believe we have a great future," said Young.
