Less than 10 years ago car sharing services were considered part of a counterculture movement. Today, they just seem practical.

SUNY Geneseo is the latest college to give students the opportunity to rent Zipcars.

“Zipcars align with our sustainability commitment,” SUNY Geneseo spokesperson Becky Stewart said. “They reduce emissions and help us become more carbon neutral. They're also great for the campus in helping us to reduce congestion on campus and demand for parking."

"I definitely won't need to buy my own car and its better than taking the shuttle everywhere," SUNY Geneseo freshman Gretchen Freudenheim said. "This is a lot easier."

Internet and wireless technologies are literally the students’ keys to the shared vehicles. Once drivers sign up for the service online, Zipcars cost about $10 per hour or $70 a day to use. Gas and insurance are included.

Drivers who give up their personal car and switch to the Zipcar say they save about $600 per month. Each shared vehicle also takes about 15 to 20 vehicles off the road.

With 325,000 members, annual revenues of $130-million and a growth rate of about 30% a year, car giants like Toyota and Ford are looking at ways to work more closely with Zipcar, from using members to test new models to designing vehicles specifically for them.

"It really makes you expand your thought," SUNY Geneseo senior J.T. Irizarry said. "I never would've thought of ever driving a Toyota, really. I like Hondas and Fords and some other cars, so yeah, when I saw these I was like oh okay, but really like driving them now."
