An Eastman Kodak spin-off is developing a compact camera that is expected to help reduce vision loss.
Lumetrics is the recipient of a grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop and produce the pocket-sized device.
Researchers say this product will revolutionize the methodology for routine examinations of the back of the eye.
Lumetrics received a $973,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop and produce the compact Fundus camera. This cutting edge technology is entering its second phase aimed at developing optical, mechanical, electronic and image analysis aspects of the camera.
"Cutting edge because we are able to put optics designs into small packages and you can design and make it right here in Rochester. It's going to be at a price point that we can get it into a general practitioners office and maybe even into inner city clinics in the future," said John Hart, Lumetrics CEO.
The grant will enable Lumetrics to add seven new positions over the next two years as it works to get the compact Fundus camera to market.
