Rochester's Ortho Clinical Diagnostics could be up for sale.
A spokesperson for Johnson and Johnson said the company is "exploring strategic alternatives" for the business.
Ortho Clinical employs about 4,000 people worldwide and 1,000 in Rochester.
In a statement, Johnson and Johnson said it "will be evaluating all options, including divestiture if it is determined that OCD could have greater potential as part of another organization whose focus is more closely aligned with its core strengths."
The company also said it will consider a spin off, a strategic alliance or keeping the business.
