"The hardest part of going to the gym is putting on your shoes; that's the hardest part of getting there,” said Tom Durkin, chronic dieter.

Tom Durkin, famous race horse announcer, isn't much different from most yo-yo dieters. On his quest to lose 70 pounds, he knows he has to exercise.

"People who are overweight and they want to get started and they are frustrated because it's sort of a monumental task to lose 100 pound or 150 pounds. I tell people if you have to lose 100, you have to lose five first, you have to lose 10, you have to lose 20 and take it in pieces,” said Dr. James Alfandre, orthopedic surgeon.

Tom has rejoined the gym, again! Just like the last time he regained his weight. Looking back he wonders, how and why he let himself go. Beating yourself up only slows down your progress. Don't look in the rear view mirror, move forward by never looking back, and be kind to yourself.

"Breaking the cycle of yo-yo dieting starts with a commitment no matter how you feel when you get out of the bed in the morning to love yourself. When you make that decision, you are far less likely to indulge in anything that could potentially be harmful,” said Meghan Lemery, LCSW-R, psychotherapist.

When exercising, which is better, cardiovascular work like a treadmill or lifting weights?

"I think both are important. I think cardio is important because you want to train that heart. You want to get that heart rate up, that will burn fat but the muscle mass you have which you can get with resistance activity, that is going to increase your metabolism and burn calories for you as well,” said Alfandre.

If you are having a hard time getting started, walk one minute, and for the next 30 days, add an extra minute a day.

At some point, exercise programs fail because people get bored. Keep it interesting, try new things, cross train, and get a buddy. If you finding your body a bit sore, especially in the beginning, the doctor says be patient.

"It can be tough the first few times, but as soon as you start making progress some of those symptoms will diminish and you will feel better. It's okay to take it slow. Start slow, you have to walk 50 feet before you walk a mile,” said Alfandre.

How often does the doctor order exercise?

"Exercise every day is essential. Do you have to have a defined workout every day? Maybe you don't have to do it seven days, but you have to have at least an hour a day of some sort of exercise maybe that means walking your dog for 20 or 45 minutes,” said Alfandre.

Tom weighs in, and he's losing weight. He's got the exercise underway, but how is he handling eating out in restaurants? Watch next Sundays report, we are going out to eat.
