Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a new and emerging field. A team formed by a mental health professional and an equine specialist promote positive growth in patients through activities that incorporate horses. EAP is so new that only a handful of therapists offer the program statewide.
Five years ago, Dr. Joseph Lancia, a psychiatrist, opened Windhorse Farm in Hilton. His patients who choose EAP have a unique opportunity to establish a relationship with horses there. Dr. Lancia’s goal, with the help of equine specialist Christine Cane, is to better understand his client’s needs by observing their interaction with the horses.
