They can provide companionship and care for those fighting serious illnesses like cancer. One new local event figures dogs can get involved in helping raise money for the fight as well.

The first ever “Bark for Life” is a "Relay for Life" fundraising event held by the American Cancer Society at Ellison Park in Rochester Saturday. Participants raise money by walking with man's best friend in tow. Walkers said they hope their efforts help both people and animals.

"My Mastif…she just passed away two weeks ago from bone cancer, and when I initially formed my team, she was still alive and I was hoping she would make it, but that didn't happen. I feel any advancements in cancer research can help people as well as animals, so we're here to support that," said Angela Baker, Sodus Point.

YNN Reporter Mary McCombs emceed the event. YNN was proud to be the media sponsor for the event.
