A two-day whitewater kayaking event kicked off Saturday morning at Lock 32 Whitewater Park in Pittsford.

YNN spoke with Paul Twist, the Lockapalooza Coordinator.

"What we have going on this year is we have multiple competitive events for the kids that we teach kayaking to, and we get a bunch of paddlers from New York State that come together to pretty much share the experience of the lock and to promote our programs and pretty much get everybody together to have a good time," said Twist.

Twist said there will be competitions in three different disciplines. The first is a slalom course, in which kayakers will maneuver through an obstacle course; the second is a boater-cross race, in which there will be a mass start racing to get to the finish first; and the third is a freestyle course, in which competitors do jumps and flips.

Anyone can go down to the park Saturday to register for a free one-hour kayaking lesson Sunday that will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"What this event does is it introduces the general public of the Rochester area on how to use the white water that we have around this area. And it builds a lot of confidence in the kids where they almost become young adults, where they have to make really smart decisions on the water, and then it carries over to any water sport they do in the future," explained Twist.

Lockapalooza goes until 3 p.m. Sunday off of Clover Road in Pittsford.
