The sounds of jazz music will be heard throughout downtown Rochester for the next eight days. The 12th edition of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival kicked off Friday night, and getting to the nineteen different venues will be much easier this year.
Music - it has a way of unlocking certain emotions.
"Heartbreak, passion, wonder, joy, nostalgia and hope," said Lori Francis, Xerox.
Each artist is characterized according to the feelings that move you.
"Connecting the heart and the mind to the music. It's called 'Be Moved,'" Francis said.
Several high school jazz bands kicked off the festival Friday and will be followed by hundreds of Rochester jazz names and national headliners like Willie Nelson and Peter Frampton.
"It's just a great time... open air, music in the streets."
The festival's mobile app, available on the iPhone and Android systems, lets you find showtimes and download the songs you just heard with ease.
While the app makes showtimes more accessible, the free shuttle service offered this year gives people a cheaper and safer option for getting around. It comes every 15 minutes until 11:30 each night throughout the festival.
"My companion here cannot walk long distances, which would be a problem if we tried to walk closer to the site," said Sally Poole, Rochester.
Organizers added the free service after receiving feedback from last year's concertgoers.
"It was more expensive. We'd come down, park in one of the private lots, which was $10 instead of $5, and we'd have to fight the crowds," said Steve Mason, Rochester.
With more than 1,200 hundred artists, there's a lot to see over the next eight days. But finding your favorite musician this year will be easier once you decide on a mood.
"Dr. John, tomorrow Delbert McClinton, and we'll probably be down every night this week."
