Construction for a new sporting goods store in Batavia has begun. YNN's Rose Eiklor has more on how residents feel about the new addition.
BATAVIA, N.Y. — After months of Genesee County Economic Development Center debate whether or not COR Development should receive tax breaks to bring a Dick's Sporting Goods to Batavia, construction for the store is underway.
The building, which used to house Lowe's, is owned by COR. COR received tax breaks from GCEDC to bring Lowe's in the shopping center. After Lowe's closed a few years later, the company received tax breaks to then bring Dick's to the facility.
Many residents tried to persuade GCEDC not to allow the breaks, but now that Dick's is coming, people we talked with are happy.
"We need a good sporting goods store and I have a grandson who is left handed so whenever we need a mitt for him for baseball we always have to go to Rochester to get one. This way we won't have to do that," said Oakfield reisdent Karen Czaja.
"There is hardly any sports stores around here and they are too expensive up here. It's great having a Dick's around," said Oakfield resident Andrew Hollfelder.
Residents hope Dick's will stay longer than Lowe's did.
We reached out to COR development but we have not heard back.
