A Genesee County company is now distributing their product along the New York State Thruway. YNN's Rose Eiklor has more on where you can now buy the product.
For more than 60 years, Yancey's Fancy has been making cheese in Genesee County. The company has become nationally known and recently began selling their product the Philippines. Now, their products, along with others are being sold as part of Governor Andrew Cuomos Taste NY initiative.
"It was a no brainer," said Midwest sales manager Mark Saglian.
Yancey's Fancy makes many different types of cheese..
''We've been producing cheese here on this location since 1947. Our niche is flavored cheddar. Buffalo wing cheddar, horseradish cheddar," said Saglian.
Now you can purchase these types of cheeses at the New Baltimore Service Area on the New York State Thruway, located between Albany and New York City.
Governor Cuomo said, “The Taste NY initiative is designed to highlight the tremendous products that are grown and produced right here in New York State, and doing so along major sources of travel is sure to grow the list of loyal consumers and support the state’s agriculture, culinary, and tourism industries.”
"I think its a great opportunity for us to get some exposure while still helping support the state as well," said Saglian.
Saglian says many people stop in the Corfu location that are just passing through.
"We're heading to Boston, Massachusetts, for a hockey tournament and my husband said that we had to stop and get some garlic cheese curd because they have the best cheese here," said Sandusky resident Kara Brunner.
Placing their cheese at a location on the Thruway just made sense.
"It supports New York state'S economy," said Saglian.
Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas J Madison said: “Since we are one of New York’s vital transportation arteries, these products will be directly marketed to hundreds of thousands of people using the Thruway. We look forward to expanding this program to more of our service areas in the future.”
Cuomo said the New Baltimore service area is the first to sell the Taste NY products, but other locations in Western and Central New York will soon carrying the items.
