The American Automobile Association, says an estimated 34.1 million people will hit the road for a 50 mile or more trip this Labor Day weekend. It's the highest holiday travel estimate for this time of year since 2008.
AAA credits lower gas prices and rising home values that help increase consumer spending.
In the Rochester area, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.81, that's down about a dime compared to this time last year. The average journey this weekend is estimated at about 594 miles and cost about $800 with the largest share of travelers heading out of town Friday.
"We are going down to South Carolina to Myrtle Beach to spend time with family," said Tamara Stock from Rochester."
"I do not want to go anywhere this weekend," said Maciej Kiljan from Rochester. "It is too busy and everybody is going so why not get some stuff done so I can go next weekend."
State police want to make sure everyone is safe out on the roads. Those additional patrols and checkpoints continue as part of the "Over the Limit, Under Arrest" campaign to keep drunk drivers off the road.
