It's no Niagara Falls.
"Just a tad less water, yeah."
But Rochester's High Falls is a powerful attraction.
"This is the first time seeing it. Saw photos with a little more water flying out of the falls, but it's quite nice," said Nick Reddan.
A day after a trip to Niagara Falls, Reddan is visiting Rochester with family and friends. The Australian liked what he saw from the east side of High Falls – when he could actually see them.
"The bushes need a little bit of trim there because you can't see the falls as you walk along the path."
Soon, that will change.
City and state leaders say a quarter of a million dollars, recently acquired from the state, will pay for improvements along what will be known as the High Falls/Genesee Brewery Line.
"The investment in the neighborhoods is truly worth it," said George Moses, North East Area Development.
The improvements on the east side of the Genesee River are one part of a project that will eventually include a trail completely circling the High Falls, which will include a bridge over the falls.
"Our officials said, what is it that you want? And we told them. And they did it. Things are getting done," Moses said.
Around $50,000 of the funding will be used to light up High Falls at night.
""We are really blessed with this. Very few cities have something like this right smack in the middle of the city. It's very unusual, and for a while, we kind of forgot about it," said Mayor Tom Richards, D-Rochester.
There was a time when the High Falls were lit up. It included a laser light show, which, according to city officials, ran its course. Budget troubles and low attendance spelled an end to that attraction, but not the city's commitment to the High Falls area.
"We should do everything we can to make sure we build on that, let people know it's here, and really maximize that natural asset we have, that unique part of the river and gorge that we have," said state Senator Joe Robach, R-56th District.
After years of failed efforts to make High Falls successful, the west side is developing. The Genesee Brew House is a big destination on the east side, and smack in the middle: potential.
"It's interesting and quite pleasant," said Reddan.
