An investigation is underway into what the Catholic Diocese of Rochester says is a misappropriation of substantial money at a local parish.
Diocese officials say parishioners at St. Monica's Church on Genesee Street were notified of the investigation by the Rochester Police Department during a mass at the end of August. The Diocese says it will not discuss details or comment further.
Rochester Police tell YNN that there is an ongoing investigation at St. Monica's. RPD's economic crimes unit is handling the case. They say the investigation is still in it's early stages and that they have hundreds of documents to review.
Police would not release a specific amount of money, but did say it is in the $100,000 range.
St. Monica's underwent a major renovation back in 2010 which included new flooring, wiring and improvements to its audio-visual equipment.
