WESTERN NEW YORK — The head of the Ontario County Democratic Party wants more then an apology. He wants federal officials to look into Congressman Tom Reed's finances.
"What they cant deny is the fact that Tom Reed didn't pay his taxes on time 38 times and on one of the occasions when he was late he used campaign funds," said John Hurley.
Hurley filed two separate federal complaints, one with the Federal Election Commission and one with the Office of Congressional Ethics.
Hurley asked, "Is this one time incident or has this happened on other occasions?"
Reed has apologized for the incident promising to make sure it never happens again. Meantime, the Congressman's staff says he welcomes any review.
Reed's campaign also pointed out the fact that it happened more than a year ago, and with Reed facing a 2014 challenge from Democrat Martha Robertson, both sides appear to be taking the gloves off.
Robertson is under fire for holding a campaign fundraiser with musician Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. Yarrow was convicted in 1970 of taking "indecent liberties" with a 14-year-old girl. Yarrow was accused of making sexual advances to the young fan after greeting her naked in his hotel room. Reed's campaign manager described Robertson's decision to accept Yarrow's help as shocking.
A Robertson campaign spokesman said there are no plans to cancel the Sept. 29 event.
"The only candidate in this race who has a record of breaking the law when he illegally paid his late property taxes with campaign funds is Tom Reed and the only candidate whose failed record we should be questioning is Tom Reed,” said George Koutsos, Robertson campaign spokesperson.
