When running in a marathons or half-marathons sometimes injury is inevitable.
Podiatrists say even the most experienced and well-prepared runners can hurt themselves.
Runners need to be mindful of symptoms and should never "run though the pain."
Experts say you can avoid foot pain altogether by training slowly and practicing prevention.
"Warm up before you run, cool down when you're done. Those are really important things to do. Be careful of pain, any foot pain or signs of injury: swelling, redness or pain, make sure you see someone to get it taken care of before you continue running and do more damage," said podiatrist Dr. Robert A. Russo.
To those running in the Rochester Marathon this weekend, Doctor Russo says if you experience foot or leg pain after a run, remember "RICE": rest, ice, compression, elevation.
