Flu season is approaching and health care professionals at Highland Hospital are preparing for it.
Highland is providing flu shots to anyone who works and volunteers there. Highland will vaccinate about 2,500 Highland employees and volunteers.
The New York State Health Department has awarded Highland for its high workforce vaccination rate.
In the United States, on average, five to 20 percent of the population get the flu. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized every year with flu-related complications.
Doctors recommend anyone six months of age and older get a flu shot.
"Every year, there is going to be a flu epidemic and we have to prepare our employees for that. If they get the flu shot, they will be available here and not home sick during the flu season and in addition to that, if they do not know they have the flu, they will be less likely to spread the flu to our patients who are vulnerable with serious consequences from that," said Dr. Mark Shelley, epidemiologist at Highland Hospital.
Some 135 million doses of the flu vaccine have been delivered to health care professionals all over the country.
