Two of our region's largest employers announced Wednesday they approved a formal affiliation agreement.
Rochester General Hospital and Unity Health System will merge into a new health system. The boards of directors for RGH and Unity voted Wednesday to approve the agreement.
In April, RGH and Unity announced they were entering into discussions to create a formal relationship. The CEOs of both hospitals say the move is in response to new provisions in the Affordable Care Act, coupled with the aging "baby boomer" population.
Unity and RGH together expect to control roughly half the patient population and revenue in the Rochester area.
The Federal Trade Commission still has to approve the deal. That could take up to a year to complete.
