Apple season is well underway, and with Halloween just around the corner, it's pumpkin picking time!
The popularity of U-Pick farms has led to an increase in consumer demand for fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the country.
It's a chance to pick your own perfect pumpkin, right from the vine where it grew.
"You don't want to get them too early, but it's fun to get them out and put them on the porch and get them ready for Halloween, and trick or treating," said Rachel Fromm of Greece.
The U-pick pumpkin patch is open for business at Green Acre Farms in Greece.
Local farmers say well-timed rain and sun have led to healthy crops this year.
"The crop is phenomenal. I've never had such a large crop and such a flavorful crop. The growing conditions were really just perfect this year," said Kathy Pearson, Green Acres Farm owner.
There is proof that Americans love their fruits and veggies, especially when it comes to pumpkins. Statistics from the USDA show New York ranked fifth in the nation last year for fresh market pumpkins, and first for pumpkin production.
"Everybody is anxious to get out there and get their pumpkins and I think they need to get them early this year, because chances are we will run out," said Pearson.
Seventy percent of the business at Green Acres is from you pick your own.
Pick your own produce is on the rise, mainly because it's a fun family event, as well as a lesson in just how hard a farmer works.
"It's not just a matter of planting a tree and waiting for the crop to come, there's a lot of work involved before we get to the harvest season," said Pearson.
Many families say picking their own produce has become a fall tradition.
"We like taking the kids out and giving them something to do and we've been doing it since they were little," said Maria Biondolillo of Greece.
"You can get outside, enjoy some family time and get the kids out of the house for a little bit," said Fromm.
