At their final practice before the Sabres open the season in Detroit Wednesday night, the team officially named co-captains for the year.
Thomas Vanek will wear the C for home games, while Steve Ott will take over the duties on the road. Christian Ehrhoff has been named alternate captain.
All three were introduced to the media in their new roles following practice on Tuesday. They represent three of the most experienced skaters on the Sabres roster.
Both Vanek and Ott are entering the final year of their contracts and a move like this signals that the organization is likely wanting to keep them around. For Ott, he says it won't change his game in any way.
"I think over the last so many years, since I started wearing an A, I've tried to stay on the right line and lead and be an example for the team. Obviously, I play a hard style, try to be competitive, and this isn't going to change anything about who I am," Ott said.
"Picking a captain is so hard. You look at this room, and there's a lot of guys who have been left out and deserve it just as much. At the end of the day, I think each guys has got to put their ego away and be happy for the team and whomever the guy is. To share it with Steve and Christian is a great honor," said Vanek.
