Greece Police were called to Barnard Park around 8 p.m. Wednesday for the report of an assault. When they arrived, Blaine O'Leary, 18, was found unconscious near the playground. Investigators say the victim suffered serious injuries after being struck in the head.
"It's a physical assault, possibly some blunt force trauma, may have possibly been a blunt object used," said Captain Patrick Phelan, Greece Police Department.
Police arrested Jacob Cary, 18, of Greece Thursday afternoon. Investigators say Cary and O'Leary know one another and the assault stemmed from a previous altercation.
Police say they encounter very little, if any, trouble at Barnard Park, and for the most part it's relatively quiet and safe.
Those that frequent the park regularly say they've never had a problem there with anyone. After Wednesday night's assault, they plan to keep a watchful eye on those around them.
"I'm very concerned about it. You know, your safety's always paramount. I'll just have to watch who's around more," said Greece resident Rick Pressley.
Police say Cary, who was charged with first degree assault, is the only suspect and no other arrests are expected.
O'Leary is in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital and cooperating with the investigation.
